Red Rising - Possibly the best sci-fi novel I've read this year

Writer: Rebekah NigroRebekah Nigro

Packed with poignant prose, riveting action scenes, intriguing characters, and a jaw-dropping plot, Pierce Brown's Red Rising saga had me on the edge of my seat.

I listened to the audiobooks read by Tim Gerard Reynolds, which possibly made me enjoy the series even more. His voice is like velvet.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I cannot emphasize this fact enough. I give it a 4.5/5, and here's why.

Pierce Brown had me hooked from the first few moments of the storyline. I immediately needed to know what the heck a Helldiver was, and yet, it felt like within a few lines of beautifully crafted prose I knew exactly where I was, who I was listening to, and why the story should matter to me.

Darrow is a helldiver on Mars, part of a large mining community that works long, hard hours mining helium for people higher in the caste system. Darrow is a Red, the lowest of the caste. And yet, we are drawn to Darrow immediately because of the camraderie he has with his fellow Reds. His people are so full of life, including his young wife, Eo. We immediately fall in love with our passionate narrator and his sweet family.

And yet, Brown gives a serious punch to the gut within the first few chapters that leaves us in the lurch, needing to know exactly what will happen to Darrow, the protagonist we already care so deeply for.

The plot thickens. The characters become vibrant with color, literally. The setting is incredible. Almost a perfect 5/5.

The only qualms I had with the book came about midway through the story, where the pace began to drag a bit. However, I highly recommend that you stay with it, because the story only gets better. There are so many twists and turns towards the middle-end of the book that I got a bit dizzy.

The book is part of a 6-part series. The first five books are out now, with the last two taking place ten years after the events of the first three. I am seriously anticipating the last book. Pierce Brown, don't leave us hanging!
